Terrie Raphael works with clay to create art for daily use. She makes a variety of functional vessels – vases, mugs, bowls and plates – that speak to both the craft and art of ceramics. Her more abstract wall-hung art often is a meditation on themes of uniqueness and solitude.
A full-time ceramist, Terrie designs each piece individually using a combination of wheel-thrown and hand-built methods. Most vessels are fired in a gas reduction kiln to 2300 degrees. All tableware is dishwasher, microwave and food safe. She creates and fires her work at Ruby’s Clay Studio and Gallery, a communal studio in San Francisco where she is on the Board of Directors.
Terrie is an exhibiting member at City Art Gallery in San Francisco. She belongs to SFMade and the SF Etsy team. Her work can be found in local galleries including Local Take, Hortica, ImagiKnit and Foggy Notion as well as at Ruby’s Clay Studio. The restaurants Bar Tartine and Frances have commissioned tableware from Terrie to showcase menu items, and floral designer Rebekah Northway of The Petaler SF often uses her vases in displays. Selected pieces have been included in juried shows including: “Impulse” at Arc Gallery (2014, 2015) in San Francisco, “Southern Migration” at the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona, CA (2015), and a ceramics installation at the Google offices in San Francisco (2013).
